College Dorm Must Haves

While I was away at school last fall, I realized how hard it can be to pack and figure out what I needed/wanted to bring. As much as I enjoyed the independence and ability to decorate my room how I wanted, I realized how much I had to fit and store in a small space. That is why, while dorm shopping, I made it my goal to find the best items to help with storage and organization. But this post isn't just about saving space and functionality. I will also share some products that made my room comfortable, cozy, and one of my favorite places to spend time and study.

  1. Storage

Collapsible Hanging Closet Shelf

If you have a lot more clothes that you prefer to fold rather than hang, or just need more shelf space, this will be great for you. It didn't take up much hanger space and was the perfect spot for all my hoodies and sweaters. It also let me use my closet shelving for more storage rather than clothes.

Shoe Rack

Perfect for saving floor space in your closet and storing in smaller places.

Cube Book Shelf/Storage (3-tier)

I had this same shelving in my room and it made for very convenient storage. It can be put vertical or horizontal, and I even bought collapsible fabric storage cubes to put inside them to hold things like socks, headbands, and other accessories.

Desk Drawer Tray Organizer

Desk Organizer

Jewelry Organizer

The desk and drawer organizers are pretty self explanatory, but easy to forget. They are great for saving space and keeping all your belongings in one spot. I couldn't find the exact jewelry organizer I had, but this one is almost identical and perfect for keeping your jewelry organized and detangled.

2. Other

Hanging Picture/bulletin Board

HP Sprocket

My picture board was probably my favorite wall decor at school. It's something that a lot of college students have and allows you to easily hang up pictures of family, friends, and pets, or to make a vision board for inspiration. I also have a sprocket printer, which makes printing out small photos directly from your phone so easy and convenient.

Desk Lamp

Air Purifier

Air purifiers help to clean the air and remove different allergens like dust, smoke, and pollen. I had one of these air purifiers and it was easy to use and set up. Its a good item to have in college since you don't fully know the state of the air, your room, and the people who you will live with.

Essential Oil Diffuser

My essential oil diffuser was definitely a must have for my dorm room and I used it every day. I love diffusing different oils for focus, relaxation, and just to make my room smell good. I even have a bunch of ideas for essential oil blends on my Pinterest and a blog post where I talk about my favorite autumn essential oil blends.

Single Serve Coffee Maker

For most, coffee is a college student necessity, and having your own coffee maker can be convenient and help you save money. I had a Keurig Single Serving coffee maker, which worked really well and was small enough to easily find a place for. And if you don't like your coffee plain, you can always get creamers, syrups, or sweeteners from the grocery store or amazon. (comes in multiple colors)

Brita Water Filter/Pitcher

My Brita was another item I used every day. It allowed me to save money by not having to buy water bottles and made me feel better about drinking the water from my dorm.

Nutribullet Blender

Whether you are currently applying to colleges or getting ready to move into a college dorm/apartment, I hope this list was helpful and gave you some ideas for what to pack and buy. I won't lie, it can be a stressful process, but if you plan properly and get what you need early on, it will make the transition so much smoother. Just know that it is all worth it in the end. Thanks for reading!
